With over 55 years of bridge design experience, Vallee was contracted by Archaeological Research Associates (ARA) Limited to assist in the preparation of the Strategic Conservation Plan for the historic Henley Bridge, on behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.

Our senior engineers completed a review of existing documentation and developed a concise technical description of the bridge. In addition to providing a Condition Assessment, they also assisted on the development of conservation strategies and an action plan.

The three-span spandrel arch structure carries eight lanes of QEW traffic and was originally built as a twin bridge. It was first widened in the late 1980s and again in 2007. At nearly a century old, it remains in use, ranking as the highest scoring bridge on the Ontario Heritage Bridge list.

Designed as the gateway to the first divided highway in North America, the bridge features Art Deco concrete posts and corbels. Today, steel replica “Elizabeth Regina” light posts line the inside media barriers of the twin bridges. It was officially opened by King George IV and Queen Elizabeth while on tour in Canada in 1940, just prior to the outbreak of World War II.
