Vallee was retained by the Town of Smiths Falls to undertake a comprehensive structural and heritage assessment of the historic Gould’s Mill complex following a significant fire event. The site includes an 1868 stone masonry mill and an adjoining 1886 brick industrial building, both recognized for their cultural heritage value within the community.

Our multidisciplinary team completed detailed structural investigations, building pathology assessments, material testing, and engineering analyses to evaluate the condition and stability of the fire-damaged structures. The work included forensic examination of the historic masonry, mortar analysis, assessment of deterioration mechanisms, and evaluation of wind and seismic performance.

Through this study, Vallee identified a feasible stabilization and restoration strategy that would preserve the historic masonry structures while improving site safety. The assessment demonstrated that, despite the fire damage, the buildings could be stabilized and retained for future adaptive reuse. The findings provided the Town with a clear understanding of the risks, costs, and opportunities associated with both demolition and preservation options, ultimately supporting informed decision-making regarding the future of this important heritage resource.
